John McDermott (b. 1961) is a set designer based in New York City. Born in Natick, Massachusetts, he has spent over 30 years working with theaters all around the United States - since 1992, he has designed more than 250 shows off-Broadway and regionally. His designs range from the abstract to the familiar, from prioritizing historical accuracy to embracing emotional environments, often combining a mixture of methods to create immersive sets in which theater flows freely.

His work has been seen at Off-Broadway venues such as the New York Theater Workshop, Cherry Lane Theatre, Playwrights Horizons, Rattlestick Theatre, and the Irish Repertory Theatre. Regionally, he has designed for Shakespeare & Company, Berkshire Theater Festival, Portland Center Stage, A.R.T. Cambridge, Creede Repertory Theatre, Seattle Fringe Festival, Folger Shakespeare Theater, LA Theater Center, South Coast Rep, Empty Space, Dorset Theater Festival, and the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival, among others.

In recent years, he has collaborated frequently with Bedlam, the Mint Theater Company, and Colt Coeur. He holds an MFA in Theater from the University of Washington and currently teaches at Adelphi University, where he is an associate professor teaching set design, drafting, properties construction, and history/application of theatre technology.
